My new JRT, Charlie

I just got a 12 week old JRT yesterday. His owner said he was eating some food called "Royal" something. When I went to the pet store they recommended "Wellness" puppy food and were told to try to split up his recommended amount of food into 3 meals. His first meal was last night and he ate about 4 pieces. This morning we gave him back the food, and he ate about a quarter of what was left. This afternoon he ate a little more of what was left and after I came home from work, I saw that his ORIGNIAL bowl of food was about half empty. The woman at the pet store said dogs wont starve himself, but I still have to worry, I'm a new JRT owner! I think he may be too excited about exploring our house and the 4 people who live in it (not including all his visitors who wanted to meet him) but I wanted to make sure. By the way, we also put a little water on the food and microwaved it for 10 seconds to make it smell stronger and more attractive to him. Should I be worried??

First of all THANK YOU for responding!!! Today he has eaten a little more but not much. The woman at the pet store said to try to leave him in the bathroom with his food ONLY for about 10 minutes and that maybe he would be less distracted and finally EAT. So we tried that. We even waited 15 minutes but all he did was whine the whole time! It was terrible! So then we took the food out and put some water on it and he ate a few pieces before my bf went over and started hand feeding him :-/ and that cant be an every day occurance. I think I'm going to start giving him smaller amounts of food at each meal and see how that goes. And yes he is healthy and runs around a lot. He takes like 2 naps a day and sleeps pretty much through the night but I think we are all just wearing him out haha

Don't worry your puppy will not starve they will eat when hungry, and please pick the bowl up 15mins after you have fed the dog,if you leave it down it will just graze all day, try and get a routine, put the food down, leave for 15 mins then pick it up, until the next feed time and you will soon see that the puppy will eat more at one go, and just add warm water a minute before giving to puppy instead of putting in the microwave, the warm water will bring the aroma out and also soften it a little for him, but do look at this forum for loads of advice from very knowledgeable JRT owners.

Hi,
Congrats on your new Jack! I wouldnt worry to much, as long as he is playing, looks healthy, is going to the bathroom and has had some of his vaccinations, he should be fine. My Jack didnt eat to much and still does not eat allot and he is 6 months old. Just keep an eye on him and dont expose him to to many places til he has had ALL his vaccinations! Enjoy, he will make you laugh allot, they are such great and smart dogs!!
