Reader Question: How To Stop Canine Smelly Gas
Any idea why our new-to-us Jack Russell Terrier passes smelly gas?
Treatment/prevention?
Veterinarian Recommendations For Treating Canine GasHi,
As long as your Jack Russell seems healthy in all other ways, the first thing I would try in this case would be a change in diet. Some individuals produce more gas than normal when they eat particular ingredients. Many pet food manufacturers make “sensitive stomach” or “easy to digest” diets; one of these would be a good place to start.
Probiotics like
Fortiflora can also help reduce gas production. If the problem persists despite these interventions, make an appointment with your veterinarian. More serious conditions (e.g., gastrointestinal infections, parasites, and immune disorders) could also be to blame.
Best of luck,
Jennifer Coates, DVM
